About Tarquinius Sulla

Tarquinius was born a slave in Capua - not the aristocratic kind of Roman servitude that produced secretaries and philosophers, but the grinding kind that worked the agricultural estates and the gladiatorial training facilities that made Capua both wealthy and infamous. His mother was a Samnite woman who had been enslaved after the Social War; his father was a lanista's property who died in training before Tarquinius was old enough to know his face. He was sold into gladiatorial training at fifteen, which saved him from the fields and substituted a different kind of risk.
