About Priya Vasanthi

Priya grew up in Colombo, the younger daughter of a Tamil Sri Lankan family who had been in the city long enough that her grandmother still called the neighbourhood by its older name. Her father was a civil engineer and her mother a secondary school biology teacher - both practical, both quietly ambitious for their daughters, neither particularly prepared for the fact that Priya would spend most of her adult life at sea. She first fell in love with the ocean at eight, during a family trip to Hikkaduwa, when a marine biologist from Colombo University let her hold a sea cucumber and then, noticing her expression, spent twenty minutes explaining the animal's respiratory system.
