About Demetria Halke

Demetria was born in Athens in the age of Pericles - the high summer of the city's confidence, when the Parthenon was still being built and the philosophers who would define Western thought were alive and in argument with each other in the agora. Her father was a prosperous metic merchant from Corinth; her mother an Athenian citizen woman of moderate family. This parentage placed Demetria in the specific social position of a hetaira - educated, independent, not bound by the domestic constraints of citizen wives, and permitted to participate in intellectual life in ways that Athenian women of citizen class were not.
