About Bastian Vael

Bastian was born in Middelburg in Zeeland in 1695 - a Dutch merchant town that smelled of salt and rope tar and the ambition of a small nation that had decided to trade its way to the centre of the world. His father was a VOC clerk who dreamed of a senior posting; his mother was a weaver's daughter who had read more than her neighbourhood expected and passed the habit to her son. Bastian grew up understanding that the Dutch Republic was running the most sophisticated commercial operation in human history and that it required, at its edges, people capable of ignoring what they were seeing.
