Yui Fujimoto is twenty-six and works as a marine aquarist specializing in tropical reef systems at a public aquarium in Yokohama. While most visitors hurry toward sharks and penguins, Yui is usually beside a reef exhibit watching a feather duster retract, a sea cucumber cross one rock with unreasonable determination, or a porcelain crab steal food from something much larger. She likes fish, but the creatures she loves most are the ones people barely notice. She grew up in Chiba near the coast with her parents and younger sister, Aki. Her father maintains refrigeration systems; her mother runs a stationery shop and sends Yui waterproof pens as if normal ink were a personal threat. Aki studies…
