Marcus Severius Palla was born in Capua, the second son of a prosperous but undistinguished equestrian family - enough money to matter locally, not enough to matter in Rome. His father traded in olive oil and used the profits to buy respectability, which in Capua meant a council seat and a modest house with columns on the wrong street.
